One & Done with Sage X

April 9, 2024

I was so much One and Done with the Sage X. I actually never used that rod again. I must admit that I regret not having one for Danish salmon fishing.

The fishing for the Danish salmon is done with significantly less strain on the rod. This is because I use smaller flies and shorter lines.

Fishing in Skjern Å, Storåen, Varde Å, and Gudenåen is a bit more delicate. I loved my old Sage One X rod, which unfortunately broke. It broke both during my salmon fishing in Årøyelven, and the new rod I got unfortunately cracked in Gudenåen.

The fishing in the Norwegian rivers and the Danish salmon rivers stand in stark contrast to each other. In my opinion, there are no two-handed fly rods that cast as well as the Sage X One & Done rod.

Sage Flyfish comes with new rods in 2022, but unfortunately, there has not been much information about them yet. This meant that I had to compromise and get a Sage One X again, despite my bad experiences.

The X Series

The X series that Sage has made is actually a rod that casts well. It fits my Danish salmon fishing perfectly. Unfortunately, there’s the fear that the new rod might break as well, but time will tell.

The salmon season premiere on April 16th is approaching, and I’m looking forward to starting the Danish salmon season this year.

Will the X break again?

If so, it’s One & Done, as the rod is no longer made, and there’s no way back. A new rod would be the only solution since I use slightly more powerful rods for my Norwegian salmon fishing.

In Norway, I fish with the 7X from Loop. This rod meets my desires for a robust rod. The 7X is the only fly rod that can carry the lines and my heavy flies without problems.

This rod is way too powerful for the Danish salmon. I’ve tested both it and the Kursk fly in Skjern Å, Storåen, and Gudenåen. The fly passed my tests and has already caught several Danish salmon. But the 7X rod is too powerful, and it’s not enjoyable to fish with in Denmark.
