Welcome to the kingdom of the big salmon. Anglers from all over the world flock to the small Norwegian river Aaroybecause of one thing: the passion for fly fishing for salmon. The entire experience is orchestrated by the Munthe Olsen family.

Aaroy river consists of a lower and an upper part, separated by a fierce waterfall of 200-300 meters. Taking that out of the total length of the river, there are about 900-1000 meters left for fishing. The river is intense and powerful at times, and that’s something to keep in mind.

Platforms have been built to walk on in the upper part of the river. They are known as "The Platforms Of Despair". The platforms are built across a high and powerful rapid, where it is physically impossible to fish without them. They have been part of Aaroy river’s history for generations and are solely made for salmon fishing.

The river is private and exclusive, so it’s not allowed to walk on the platforms or other areas by the river without permission. The anglers who visit Aaroyhave paid for privacy and fishing rights.

The First Time

When you arrive for the first time, you’re touched by the historic atmosphere and the intensity of the river. Aaroy river is historic. It has hosted the Norwegian king, princes, dukes, earls, Coco Chanel, Charles Ritz, the Duke of Westminster, the former Russian Tsar’s finance minister, and not least L.R. Hardy. However, this doesn’t scare off the regular salmon angler from fishing here. The Salmon Season

As the salmon season approaches, you can feel the excitement. All the fishing gear is prepared multiple times throughout the winter. In this river, it’s important which equipment and knots are used. The salmon decides here.

Up to 32 groups of anglers from all over the world arrive throughout the season with a shared passion for salmon fishing. It’s about fishing, eating, and sleeping. Catching a salmon, however, is never guaranteed. Nature’s whims and the salmon’s will decide the outcome.

The river’s pools are often short and intense. The powerful currents place high demands on the angler’s creativity and will. The fishing guides offer encouragement, tips, and strategies for each pool.

Teddy Pool

In Teddy Pool, there is a fair chance of holding the fish in the pool, thanks to the calm water and the possibility of following the fish in a boat. White Stone Pool also offers good chances for salmon fishing, depending on the angler’s experience and equipment.
