As the fly fishing season approaches, many anglers are eagerly preparing their gear and strategies for a successful catch. Aaroy, known for its challenging conditions and rewarding salmon fishing, requires specific techniques and setups to maximize your chances. Although I won’t be guiding at Aaroy this year, I’m happy to share some valuable insights and recommendations based on my experience and recent conversations with fellow anglers.

The Anticipation and Preparation

The excitement of fly fishing at Aaroy starts long before you cast your first line. Anglers often begin their preparation by selecting the right gear and tying custom flies. One of my friends, Mr. M, shared his innovative approach to fly tying, which simplifies the process and increases versatility:

“I tie the flies leaving a 5 mm tube at the front, so you can fit a 1, 2, or 3-gram head. This way, you don’t need three flies in different weights,” Mr. M explained. This technique allows for quick adjustments based on the water conditions and can be a game-changer in varying environments.

Understanding the Conditions

Aaroy’s conditions can be tough, and understanding them is crucial for success. The water flow, temperature, and tide levels play a significant role in determining the best approach. As I discussed with Mr. M, specific setups are recommended for different parts of the river.

Floating Line and Heavy Flies

Floating line, long leader, heavy fly (small if possible), and short cast, especially in the early season, almost the same in mid seaon, I advised. The lower pools, being running pools, means that salmon are more likely to grab anything in their path. During high tide and with 100 cubic meters per second (m³/s) flow, homepool can be an excellent choice. However, it’s crucial to remember that such high flow rates are rarely ideal in Whitestone, except for specific spots downstream.

Breaking the Fast Current

One of the significant challenges in Aaroy is dealing with fast currents. With 100 cubic meters per second speed, a sinking line setup may be too slow, causing the fly to miss the optimal fishing zone. “Think about gravity here; you need to break the fast top current before you can find any salmon,” I emphasized. This involves strategic casting and using the right gear to ensure the fly reaches the desired depth quickly.

Success Stories and Techniques

Reflecting on past successes can provide valuable lessons. I recalled an incident shared by Mr. T., who caught the biggest salmon of the year using an unconventional method. “Mr. T. caught a salmon at the surface on a sunray shadow from the Whitestone side,” I shared with Mr. M. This technique involved a floating line with a tip and a red tungsten head on the fly. The fish took the fly when it hit the surface, suggesting that the drop-sound might have triggered the strike. This catch occurred on the 1st of June, with a flow of 51 cubic meters per second and a temperature of 7°C, under clear skies and high sun around midday.

Adjusting Your Approach

Based on these insights, sticking with tip setups can help enhance your swing and ensure dense flies get down quickly. The classic swing technique remains effective, but adapting it to current conditions and incorporating tips can improve your chances.

Final Thoughts

Fly fishing at Aaroy is an exhilarating experience that requires careful preparation and adaptability. By understanding the river’s dynamics, selecting the right gear, and learning from past successes, you can increase your chances of a memorable catch. As you gear up for the 2024 season, keep these insights and recommendations in mind to make the most of your fly fishing adventures at Aaroy.
